Treatment of minor illness

High Temperature

Children who have a high temperature should be kept cool by taking off excess clothing, by sponging with lukewarm water and by giving them paracetamol every four to six hours.

Diarrhoea and vomiting

When people have diarrhoea and sickness it is important to replace lost fluids. Clear fluids (water or weak juice) for 24 hours will replace lost fluids and help prevent dehydration.

Colds and ‘Flu

Colds and ‘flu are caused by viruses and are not treatable by antibiotics. Bed rest, plenty of fluids and paracetamol, every four to six hours, are the mainstays of treatment. This is usually enough to allow the body to fight off infection.
